Songlines Series

Since 1991, the Songlines Series at Mills College has been an exciting Bay Area forum for exploring the latest ideas in experimental music, improvisation, and sound art.

Presented by the Center for Contemporary Music (CCM), these symposia on sound, nature, technology, and performance consist of informal evening concerts and discussions led by CCM composers-in-residence, guest composers, performing artists, and leading musicologists.

Past Songlines guests have included luminaries such as Pauline Oliveros, David Tudor, Alvin Lucier, Maryanne Amacher, Hildegard Westerkamp, James Tenney, Luc Ferrari, and Morton Subotnick. Featured Songlines musicians and improvisors have included groundbreaking artists such as Tetsu Saitoh, Gunda Gottschalk, Jane Rigler, Gianni Gebbia, Anne Laberge, and Georg Graewe.

To encourage interaction between the audience and artists, events are held in the intimate Mills Ensemble Room, located in the east wing of the Music Building.

All Songlines Series events are free and open to the public. Most, but not all, events are held in the Ensemble Room in our Music Building. Check individual event listings to confirm the venue.
